FLATDIG

Dig deep. Grab the shiny. Beat the water.

Rasmus the miner goes down into seven real Norwegian mines for the last of the crystals, and the groundwater is rising behind him. Dig a path through the soil, watch the boulders wobble and come down where you dug, grab the glowing crystals and make it to the shaft before the water does. From the copper mine at Røros to the blue ice under Svartisen, every mine is a different place. A child understands it just by watching, and a minute later wants a go.

I want a FlatboyOne player through eight caves in four mines, or two at the same table, each racing the same cave from their own end.

Dig under it. Step aside. GULP!

The boulder wobbles, Rasmus steps aside, and it lands right where he stood. Somebody at the table gasps before you do, and Rasmus turns round to look at you, all innocence. Then the crystals tumble down the tunnel you dug for them, and the water creeps up another notch.

Dig the right spot. Then get out of the way.

Every cave is full of boulders and crystals resting on soil. Dig under one and it wobbles for a moment, long enough to see it coming, then down it comes. Step aside in time and you get a big GULP! Don't, and Rasmus is flat as a pancake, a little ghost in a hard hat floats away, and he is straight back for another go.

Deeper down, old timber props hold up whole ceilings of boulders and crystals until you knock them out, and dry-stone walls only open with a stick of dynamite. All the while the groundwater rises from below: no clock to read, just water you can see coming. It is so clear you still see every stone under it, and it splashes and ripples round Rasmus, his cap lamp shining through it.

FLATDIG: the copper mine, the coal seam, the ice cave and the iron mine

Seven real mines. Every one a new place.

The journey starts in the copper mine at Røros, ochre earth with green copper stains, then goes down into a black coal seam on Svalbard, a blue ice cave under the Svartisen glacier and the red iron mine at Kirkenes, two caves in each. The duels have mines of their own: the silver mine at Kongsberg, a pink granite quarry by Iddefjorden and Grønligrotta, a limestone cave with a river running through it.

Every mine has its own rock and soil, its own boulders and props, its own light and its own water, and you can feel the air: coal dust puffing up as you dig, frost drifting through the ice cave, drips falling in the limestone. Rasmus is with you all the way. You see his back as he climbs and his face as he drops, he turns to look at you when you stop for a moment, and when he makes it out he cheers, right at you.
