Questions.
Straight answers. Where something isn't decided yet, we say so, and we'll fill it in before pre-orders open.
The table
How big is it?
90 × 42 cm, and 5.7 cm thin. It lies flat on the coffee table, with room around it for the crisps and the glasses.
The screen is a 27-inch portrait screen, 1080 × 1920, running down the middle between the two of you.
How much does it weigh?
We'll give you the weight once a production table has been on the scales. We'd rather tell you late than guess.
What's it made of?
A real American walnut finish on top. Sanwa joysticks with quick-release tops, six buttons a side, a walnut spinner, flipper buttons on both sides, and stereo speakers. The tray, bezel, buttons and stick tops are black. A Raspberry Pi 5 runs it all.
How is it powered?
The full power details (the supply, the plug, what it draws) aren't published yet. They'll be in the spec sheet before pre-orders open.
Is it hard to set up?
No. Put it on the table and switch it on. The screen shows a QR code: scan it with your phone, and you're in. No app to install, no account to make.
How does it get on Wi-Fi?
With your phone. Scan the code on the screen and set up the Wi-Fi from there. Same as everything else on Flatboy: no app, no account.
Playing
How many people can play?
Two at the table, one at each end, face to face. Every game turns to each player, so nobody reads upside down.
Phones join as extra controllers: scan, join, play. The board games take up to six, and one phone can be shared and passed round the table.
Which games come with it?
A whole library: FLATLEAGUE football, FLATRALLY Group B rally, FLATCLASH, FLATFIST karate, FLATPIRATES, and board games like LUDO, JATSI and SJAKK. See them all.
What do games cost?
The games on the table come with it. More arrive in the Market: games made by people and shared between Flatboys, each with a play, tinker or remix licence. What Market games cost isn't set yet; we'll announce it before pre-orders open.
What is the net?
An accessory that clips onto the table. Black felt hangs onto the screen so each of you sees only your own half. That opens up the hidden-information games: strategy in the fog, hidden fleets, secret aim, cards. Finally, a poker face that counts. See the net.
Its price is to be announced.
Can I play my old arcade games?
You can add arcade classics you own and give them their own shelf in the lobby, next to ours.
Arcade games are not included. Add only games you own or hold a licence for. We don't sell, ship or supply any arcade games or ROMs, and we take no responsibility for games you add.
Flatlabs
What is Flatlabs?
A game maker you talk to, from your phone. Tell it the game you wish existed when you were twelve. It asks which classic it should feel like (or you send a screenshot or a photo of the game), studies it, quotes you the credits first, then builds its own version and tests it on the table. Its own names and art, never a copy. See how it works, or bring your own AI.
What are Quick, Arcade and Studio?
The three sizes of game Flatlabs makes. You pick the size, and it tells you what it costs in credits before it starts.
What do AI credits cost?
Prices for credits aren't set yet. We'll announce them before pre-orders open. Whatever they end up being, Flatlabs quotes the credits before it builds, so you know first.
Can I share what I make?
Yes. Games made by people go in the Market and are shared between Flatboys, with a play, tinker or remix licence.
Ordering, shipping and returns
What is the Founders Edition?
Simply the first 50 orders, at the same price as every Flatboy. The same walnut table, the same games. You're just first. Pre-order.
Do I pay anything now?
No. Right now you can sign up to be kept updated, and that's free. We'll tell you how ordering and paying works before pre-orders open, and you'll see every number before you pay anything.
When does it ship?
The ship window is to be announced. We'll announce it before pre-orders open, and you'll see it before you pay anything.
Where do you ship, and what does shipping cost?
We're a small company in Norway. Which countries we ship to and what it costs are to be announced; we'll announce both before pre-orders open.
What's the warranty?
The warranty terms come with the pre-order terms, published before pre-orders open. Your consumer rights under the law where you live apply on top, whatever we write.
Can I change my mind?
Yes. Signing up costs nothing and binds you to nothing: ask, and we take you off the list. The refund and return terms for orders will be in the pre-order terms, which we'll publish before pre-orders open.
What about Flatboy Slim?
The lighter sibling: a 20-inch screen in a beige top, with the same Flatboy OS and the same games. The price is on the pre-order page.
It's on the same terms as the Flatboy: sign up to be kept updated, and you'll hear the day pre-orders open.
Children and parents
Is it for kids?
It's for everyone round the table. Board games the whole family fights over, up to six with phones, and you across the table showing them how it's done. Until they beat you.
Do the kids need an app or an account?
No. Phones join by scanning a code on the screen: no app, no account, nothing to sign up for.
What can parents control?
What parents can see, lock and limit (Flatlabs credits and the Market, for example) is to be announced. We'll publish exactly what's there before pre-orders open.
Anything to watch out for with small children?
The stick tops are quick-release, so they come off. Keep them out of reach of very small children.
Arcade classics are added by you, the grown-up. Arcade games are not included. Add only games you own or hold a licence for.
