SJAKK

Sixty-four squares. No excuses.

Grandad's chess set came out after Sunday dinner, and nobody touched it until he'd set it up. SJAKK is chess across the table, every rule of it: castling, en passant, promotion, and the draws a friendly game needs without anyone having to claim them. Tap a piece on your phone and where it goes. Play a friend at the other end, or the computer, which looks ahead and can be beaten.

Both sides, thinking.

White and black on a wooden board seen from above, each side's pieces facing their owner. The strips along the edge show check and who's ahead.

Real gameplay, straight off the table's screen.

Every rule. Nobody has to claim a thing.

Chess is chess. Legal moves only. Castling both ways, en passant, promotion to a queen, rook, bishop or knight. Check, checkmate and stalemate. White moves first, whoever took it.

The draws happen by themselves: the same position three times, fifty moves each without a pawn move or a capture, or too little left on the board to mate. At a kitchen table nobody knows to claim them, so the table does.

Tonight

Face to face

Two phones, one at each end, white against black. White moves first, whoever took it.

On your own

Against the computer

On your own, the computer takes the other side: a careful opponent you can beat.

One phone

Two people can share one phone, passed across the table. When the turn changes hands, the glass says GI MOBILEN TIL … (pass the phone to …).
