FLATDERBY

Real damage. Real arenas. The last car running wins.

A field outside town on a Saturday, a ring of tyres, a crowd on the bank and eight old saloons with their numbers painted on by hand. FLATDERBY is that afternoon from straight above: real car physics, real damage, real arenas. Drive your nose into his door and he takes the hit, not you. The last car still running wins.

Nose in. Keep your engine.

A breaker's yard with wrecks to hide behind, a car shoved into a stack, a door spinning off across the gravel, smoke going from white to black. Somebody at the table always reverses into the other one at the last second.

Real gameplay, straight off the table's screen.

Every hit lands somewhere. And the car remembers it.

The nose takes the radiator and the engine, a corner takes the wheel, a hit in the flank bends the steering. Bumpers, bonnets, doors and wheels come off and lie in the arena for the others to drive over. Engines smoke, misfire, boil and burn.

It is an arcade derby: the cars take a lot, the walls hardly hurt, and the car that drives in takes far less than it gives. A big enough hit rolls a car onto its roof; it rights itself and comes back for more. Back into them and keep your engine: the oldest trick in the field.

Real arenas. Built from the real places.

The Indianapolis Speedrome's figure 8. Foxhall Stadium in Ipswich. Frontier Days Arena in Cheyenne. Thunderbird Arena in Kitsap. Goole Docks. Kongsberg Motorsenter. The ice on Tisleifjorden, up on Golsfjellet. Spro gruve, the old mine pit on Nesodden.

And five wilder places: a breaker's yard, a sand pit, a farm with a barn bridge, a star fort from 1673 and a hollow in the spruce woods. Pick a car, pick a place, and somebody at the table is already grinning.

Four ways to wreck.
