Sunset colours, a soundtrack you hummed for a week, and California Games loaded one more time. FLATCOAST has that summer, and it feels like it: the Sunset Coast Games, Palmera Beach, 1986. Race the BMX track, skate the half-pipe, keep the footbag up, surf the point, roll the boardwalk and throw the disc down the beach. Both of you at once, each on your own half of the table.

Palmera Beach, 1986. One long summer day.

The Sunset Coast Games run through one summer day in Palmera Beach: the Dry Creek BMX park at high noon, a wooden vert ramp in a car park in the afternoon, the lawn by the pier, the point break at golden hour, the boardwalk at sunset, and the wide beach at dusk with the neon on.

Pick your athlete, your sponsor and your name. Rico, Sunny, Kai and Jazz; Vector Bikes, Solar Cola, Neon Wax Co. and the rest. A radio DJ calls the day, over chip music full of surf riffs and synth-pop, made for this game.

All six events in order, from the BMX park at noon to the beach at dusk. Gold is worth five points, silver three, bronze one, and the most points makes you Coast Champion. Beat a record and it gets your initials; the ten best Games totals go in the Hall of Fame.
